SIGNAL & TELEGRAPH

The S&T Department is a small group of volunteers that look after the railway's signalling and internal telegraph systems. We are responsible for the maintenance of 2 signalboxes, 7 groundframes as well as the implementation of new signalling at Bolton Abbey, the consolidation of that already installed elsewhere and drinking tea.

Embsay is a principally all-mechanical box and is the only Midland 'box in preservation controlling the same location it was deigned for. The signals are moving towards being Midland lower quadrants as they require replacement.

Stoneacre is also mechanical, but with motor points installed at the far end of the loop. The signals are principally of LMS origin.

Bolton Abbey will be an Electro-pneumatic system - a first for preservation - featuring a mixture of air operated upper and lower quadrant Midland and LMS signals and also some colour searchlight signals dating back to the 1930s all operated by a miniature ex-London Underground frame.

We are always on the look out for new volunteers to help; if you have a mechanical aptitude or just the urge to get dirty and give a hand you are always welcome.
